Logon scripts and winset

I’m triing to use logon scripts to set enviroment variables. I have tied using the ‘set’ in the batch file when user logs in the variables are not set. I have used, by suggestion winset.exe from Win95/SR2 and I get Dr Watson errors. What are some other possible way of setting these variables?
