Losing ISP connection

After booting and accessing Net through cablemodem and after a variable time lapse I lose my internet connection. Rebooting brings it back only to lose it again after a while. Any common cause of this in Win 2000? Could it be a faulty NIC? Other stations on my router switch are working fine.
