Losing roaming user profiles in NT4.0

On occasion, a user will “lose” their roaming profile. When they log onto the domain, all of their settings are gone. e.g. background, icons, etc. Their profile is still located locally and on the server but when they logon NT does not find it. The user recieves no error message and displays a bogus profile. If I remove the user as an administrator of the workstation their profile reappears but none of the applications they run from the server work. Usually results in a registry error. Adding the user back as an administrator of the workstation results in the bogus profile once again. The only solution we have found is to delete the user and then set them up again reinstalling all applications. There has to be an eaiser way.
