Machine Name Change on Intranet Server

I have an existing web server IIS 3.0 hosting our intranet (machine name web1). We purchased a win 2k powerapp with IIS5.0 and set up our new intranet content on it (machine name web2). Our users have a shorcut \\web1\index.html to get to the intranet. We would like to turn off web1 and rename web2 to web1. Is the machine name intergrated somehow to iis? would it be possible to change and have users keep their shortcut and get to the new content?
