Make CD-ROM and CD/RW work in Windows XP

Installed Windows XP Professional. CD-ROM and CD/RW did work. Now 6 months later, they are recognized in the Drives, but do not read or write to any CDs, CD/RWs, etc. Your help is appreciated.
