make floppy work in Windows XP

I have upgraded Windows 2000 to Windows XP..and I have now problems with floppy..From hardware point of view it is ok..But, whenever I put floppy in floppy drive it says that floppy needs to be formated(even though they are preformated ), and then it can not format them, even though by< the help file, this floppies should be accepted anyway..I updated a driver but it didn't help..
