malfunctioning start button in Win2K

My start button has stopped working. Every time I attempt to select it, it crashes (doesn’t bring computer down, though).

This also occurs if I try to access it by pressing the windows key, or if I try to navigate using win explorer to get to thefolder containing the start menu contents. Explorer crashes.

Is there anything I can do short of a reinstall? I tried to do a “repair” installation, didn’t work.
