Maximum permissible downtime for NT PDC

Does any know the microsoft recommendation for the maximum permissible downtime for PDC. I need to know this to determine a standard according to which I can decide whether to promote a BDC to PDC for a site or leave the site without a PDC for that time (during which the PDC is taken down for maintenence)
