Me Woes

A friend of mine asked me to help out with a dial-up networking problem on his laptop. He can connect to his ISP just fine but cannot access a web page or even ping anything. In the past I’ve worked for a local ISP so I know the obvious settings to play with but I have had absolutely no success with this laptop. So below is a list of the things I’ve tried, this is my last resort before I just fdisk his hard drive and load win2k.

reloading windows ME over the top of his existing ME installation.

Removing all of his network protocols and reinstalling them.

Creating new dialup connections.

Tring a different modem and a different ISP.

Different init strings.

Adding a gateway and dns entries for his ISP in network settings.

using msconfig.exe to stop all programs from running.
