ME Worries

I am trying to help a friend out with a problem.
He is running Windows ME on a 20G Harddrive with a Q-lity mainboard. It was working fine before but has gotten unstable recently and terminates itself without warning at any stage in any program.
Are there any suggestions as to why this is happening?
