media player ver. 9 cannot read vcd

i downloaded windows media player ver. 9 because it supports or can play vcds. i thought my problem was solved. it did not. i selected vcd under PLAY in the main menu. i thought i can already watch the movie. but the vcd hanged as well as the computer, the same problem i encountered with my old media player (ver. 8 that does not support vcd). what do you think is the problem? please help me with this problem. i am using an hp cd-writer in playing vcd.
