memo in Access report

I have a memo field in a linked table. A nest of two queries shows the contents of the field, but when I put a report above the higher-level query I wander into non-response, with the task Manager showing very high CPU usage. If I try to pass the memo through a function I get my report in the usual time, although no function is giving me anything useful. How do I get the memo into my report?
