Memory cannot be read/written

windows xp prof. sp1
amd2000
1gb ram
several programs, including windows media player, abort due to referencing memory that cannot be either read or written.
This frequently occurs when closing the program concerned, but also at other times such as when converting video.
What may be the problem ?
