memory errors

I have a friend who has a compaq computer (1st mistake)He purchased 128mb of ram to upgrade it.After installing it the computer had memory errors,took forever to boot,and the wrong amount of memory was listed.Also win ME is barley running.He removedthe memory and put the original memory back in and now he still has the same problems.Any Ideas
