Missing CDDrive&Laptop Boots to SAFEMODE

I have in my possession a laptop that refuses to detect its CD drive. Since I loaded Acrobat 4.0 to it it will only boot into SAFE Mode. Can anyone give me any clues as to how I can rectify eiother of these problems
