Modem gone silent

Dear all,

I have recently hooked up to the internet, and for a few days the familiar sound of connecting to the internet played through my PC’s speakers. But now I hear nothing – I use my soundcard for CD’s, mp3’s, normal sounds etc., but the familiar internet connection sounds have become silent.

Could someone please inform me of how to turn the modem sounds back on? I have an internal model (exact model unknown). I hook up to the internet fine and the sound system seems to work for everything else.
