mouse, keyboard freeze on win xp startup

I am running Win xp pro with a Genius optical mouse and a microsoft multimedia keyboard. The system ran fine (with the mouse and keyboard) until I ran the installation cd’s for the two devices. WIndoes continued running fine until I rebooted. Now the keyboard and mouse freeze in the middle of the bootup process. It opens to my desktop and update notices, etc. come up, but both my mouse and keyboard are completely frozen. What do I do?
