moving files – preserving permissions

I am about to retire an old NT 4 file server. I need to move all data files to a new 2000 server. However, I am not looking forward to replacing all of the file permissions on each and every folder as they are all different. There is about 30 Gigof data (so you know how many folders that is). I think I can restore the data to the new server from tape to preserve permissions. Is there another way to do a network file copy and preserve them?
