mprexe error

Hi ,
I have a windows 98 laptop computer.
When I try to bootup –right after the logon screen I get the following error message: MPREXE
this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
And the computer freezes w/this on the screen.
I’ve also tried it w/safe mode w/the same results.
I also tried restoring previous registry’s but still the same results. I could get to the dos prompt but not sure what to do from there.Any help would be appreciated..
