MS Equation Editor crashes in XP

I have MS Office 2000 running on Win XP Service Pack 1, whenever I tried Insert->Object->MS Equation Editor, the Application crashes, asking me whether I want to send a report to Microsoft. I have tried upgrading the MS Office 2000 by downloading its service packs but it did no good.
Any suggestions?
