MS Proxy Server 2.0 Problems

I’ve just installed proxy server 2.0 on a 1000 node network with only a Wan Router.
I only have internal addresses on the lat and my external nic does not have an internal address. My question is why can’t I ping the gateway address from the proxy server? The external nic is the only card that has a gateway address.
