MS Word takes over my download

I have run into a very frustrating and, to me, an unusual problem. Every time I attempt to download any type of program/software, MS Word takes it and converts it to a .doc file rendering it useless. Is there anyone out there who can help me solve this problem? I am very grateful for any help with this ordeal.
