My Documents folder in Windows

Why has opening and working with files in My Documents folder on Win 98 PC slowed to a crawl?

I ended up creating a new folder and dumping all the files from My Docs to this new folder and things work fine now. After emptying My Docs folder into the new folder named “My Files” and rebooting, I then put the files back into My Docs folder to see if this would improve the slow down. However, My Docs folder opperated again like molasses has been mixed in with the files. Will I ever be able to use My Docs folder again?
