My boss has a Gateway desktop at home and uses an Acer TravelMate at work. When he takes the Acer home, he tries to connect to the Gateway, using a NIC and a crossover cable. This does not work at his home. But he has brought all of the equipmentinvolved (Computers, cables, keyboard, mouse, monitor) to work, and the 2-way network works, hooked up exactly as it is at his home.
We have made sure that all of the equipment that works in the office is the stuff actually used at home. I have had him set up his computers here in the office, with no coaching from me. Everything worked. He took the stuff home and hooked up the same way – and nothing.
I guessed that the problem might come from power problems in his home’s wiring, so I loaned him a half-decent UPS to try at home. No dice.
I thought that his home printer and/or scanner might be conflicting in some way, so I made sure they weren’t connected to his desktop. Again, nothing.
So, help, please. What silly thing are we missing?
