network cable unplugged??

i just installed a network adapter into my pc and am trying to set up a local area connection with my laptop, both running xp. both network adapters are working fine according to the device manager, but when i start the network setup wizard it says that my network connection is disconnected.

In network connections folder under my LAN it says that my network cable is unplugged, but it is definately plugged in. any suggestions?
