Network Scanning

Is there a way for me to use my scanner on the network? I would like to be able to hook my scanner up to a workstation (or some other way) and be able to scan from another computer located in another room. Please let me know if this can be done by asharing method like the printers in Windows 2000/XP or by way of third party software.
