Network Speed

I want to connect a few more computers to a network without spending too much money now as we may be going to fibre optic or wireless in the next year. How do I know what speed the network is running at?
Can I use the spare wires in cat5 cable to piggy back extra machines. Are there any other temporary solutions?
Any suggestions greatfully appreciated
