Networking 2 Me machines

by swetbak . Updated 25 years ago

I’m going nuts!!
I have two machines running Me connected with a crossover cable. One machine (host) has and injet and a laser printer attached (well, not at the same time) to lpt1.
Last week I tried to share the inkjet with the other computer (client). After loading the driver software and setting up the share, all it would do is lock-up my client whenever I tried to print. Communication test also failed. I gave up after trying everything. Couple days later I tried the same with the laser printer. Was able to get everything all set-up, but the printer icon stayed “greyed” out and it said it was off-line. After doing everything I could think of, I gave up. I tried again last night and now nothing shows up in My Network Places on the client machine. I can see both machines from the host machine. Funny thing, I can ping the host, and map drives to the host. I’ve tried everything: F&P sharing, yes; same subnet; gateway ok; used wizard; did it manually; added Netbui, etc..
Remember I never had a problem accessing shares from either computer before installing the printers. I have since removed both printers from the client and still not able to brouse the Network. My ICS still works. I have Zone Alarm, but totally disabled it. Could there be a limitation networking with a crossover cable? Any help appreciated.
