networking xp

I have a new computer running XP with a cable modem connected via usb. Want to get data off old ME computer connected via nick cards. Ran the wizard, but I can’t see the ME machine. Icon on XP machine shows open LAN connection. I thought networkingwas easier with XP. (I successfully networked a win 2000 machine to the ME in the past)
