new designer!!

I am designing a web site and have a question…. I need to be able to track a list of participants in a program I am designing. Let’s say every 50 people who participate in my program receives a gift…. How can I track every 50th person? How can I display every 50th persons name on my site? Would I use some sort of counter? Someone please help!!
