New File Menu – too many icons

When you right click on the desktop or inside a folder, then click on new, you get some choices. First is [new] Folder, then [new] Shortcut, then a bunch of things I have never used (winzip file, wave song, etc). On my Compaq at home, the list is solong it’s ridiculous. How do I get rid of all those icons (without uninstalling the programs). Also, the Compaq has trouble getting to the one you want – when you click new, it gives you the Folder, Shrotcut, etc. list, but when you move the pointerover to any of them, it goes to the file menu item underneath the long drop-down menu list. (Make any sense?) Anyway, this one’s worth 200 points. Thanks.
