New hard drive

Hi,
I have a win/98 computer. I just purchased a hard drive to hookup as a slave to my existing drive.When I boot up the bios sees the second drive but in the my computer icon it still only shows 1 drive(drive c the original). In device manager I’m unable to assign a drive letter.
Any help would be appreciated
