Nividia GForce2 problems

I have an system running XPHome with a Nividia GForce2 MX400 video card. I have had this video card installed with no problems for over 6 months. Now the machine boots fine until the video driver is loading, at which it reboots. I can only get logged into safe mode. I have unintstalled the driver and reinstalled the downloaded xp driver from the Nivida site. No help. I have removed the hardware but XP automatically finds the hardware and reinstalls the suspect driver. How can I turn of autodetect hardware in XP and/or what can I do to solve this?
