I’m currently upgrading desktop systems from W98SE to WinXP Pro. After the upgrade, some machines won’t print to an HP LJ 1000 that’s connected to the network via the parallel port on another W98SE machine. These PCs accessed that printer fine prior to upgrading. There doesn’t “seem” to be any rhyme or reason why some PCs will connect OK after the upgrade while others won’t, except that the one’s that WILL are all connected via a LAN Manager Printer Port vs a Local Port. (The latter is Microsoft’s recommended configuration for an XP machine connecting to a network printer; i.e., use the printer’s network UNC name as the name of the Local Port.) However, I’m unable to force the acceptance of a LAN Manager Printer Port over a Local Port. The best success I’ve had is to uninstall the printer prior to upgrading, then reinstall, but even that doesn’t work every time. This issue stumped both HP & Microsoft.
