No display & shut dwon on boot up

After installing new software (Nikon Coolscan)and selecting a colour option, the display went blank on trying to open the program. On re-booting the pc I now get no display and after the POST which beeps once, which I think is normal, the system shuts down. Is this just be a display driver problem or something more serious?
I also seem to have had more problems with software since changing to FAT32 than previously. Could this be the root cause of my problems?
