On a New Dell laptop running XP our CD-RW wouldn’t write to CD’s so Dell Support advised me my next step would be to boot up on XP installation disk and running the Repair option. After doing so,the CD-WR still can’t write to CD-RW disks (various brands), but more importantly, none of my dial-up programs will recognize the modem. They say, even after uninstalling & reinstalling them, that there ‘is no modem connection’. Device Manager says modem is there and is working correctly. I removed & reinstall modem too. After another call to Dell, Dell said to format hard drive and reinstall system again. (Dell is sending me a new CD-RW drive to try). Isn’t this drastic? Anyone heard of this and is there a better way to fix modem, maybe tweaking registry?
