No sound after reinstalling XP

Hi,

I just had to reinstall XP. Put all files into a folder “old data”. Now I have NO sound. Also, when I try to DL directx, DXDIAG or anything from Windows Update site, I get “time outs or can’t find page?” Are these problems related? Everything else seems to DL & view from other sites.
Can’t seem to figure out where Sound drivers are.

In Start/ControlPanel/Sound& Audio – everything is grayed out with NO audio device?
512 RAM, 1 G mb(AMD) with onboard sound.

ANy help/suggestions greatly appreciated.
