Not able to open short cut Menu

I have windows 98 and Office 2000 on my computer. Of late a very typical problem has arisen. Whenever I try to open a short cut menu by right clicking either on the desktop or elsewhere the explorer displays that the program has performed an Illegaloperation and it closes the program in which I work thus I loose my work. I have tried all possible solutions but no rectification of the fault.
