NT/BDC Cleanup and Maintenance

I have taken over the administration of the BDC located at our site and the disk space is in need of maintenance and defragmentation. Currently, a full backup is being dumped to a DAT tape nightly. I want to create a schedule of when backups, defragmentation and other procedures that should be done to keep the BDC functioning at its optimal performance level. Any suggestions or does anyone already have a schedule for what should be performed on a BDC and a timeline of the monthly maintenance? Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.
