NT4 System Sounds

Okay, okay, it’s a small issue, really, but my NT4 workstation (SP6a) doesn’t like to play system sounds for some reason. If I go into the control panel I see the sounds associated with each event. Pushing the “play” button does indeed play the sound – but it’s like they’re unlinked somehow to the events that are supposed to set them off, particularly the startup and shutdown.

Is there some registry entry that’s gotten ‘grunged’ that I should look at?
