NT4 to win2k upgrade

I have a 6 domain master model that I’m planning to upgrade to win2K. I want the namespace to be company.com
I figure that I have to build a new server to be the root of the tree to accomplish this. Otherwise the domain name of any of the existing domains would get pulled into the namespace with an in place upgrade. Am I thinking correctly on this?
