NTVDM freezes system for 40 secs

Doesn’t matter which program it is…if I close any DOS program in my Win2k workstation…I have to either wait about 40 seconds for the system to respond, or kill the NTVDM.exe in the task manager. The second I kill the NTVDM process, it unfreezes the system. It’s really annoying…any ideas?
