Objects within directories

In the lower left window of windows explorer there is a display that shows how many objects within the currently selected directory. In Windows NT, those objects are shown constantly whereas in Win 98 they just flash as you select a directory. Is there a setting within Win 98 to turn that object display on so that it remains after selecting a directory.
