Only quick surge of power to motherboard

I just bought a new motherboard, a Asus p4c800 dlx. After installation when I flip the switch on the powersupply I do get the green light on the MB although when I hit the front panel power switch I only get a quick surge of power which makes the fan spin up but then immediately turn off. The green light on the MB stays on the entire time. Any clues at all?
