Opening a file

I have tried a couple ot times to download article to read. The download goes ok and I save it in a seperate file on my hard drive. The problem is when I try to open it. It tries to open the file in Windows Media Player and then I get a message that it does not support this format. How can I open these files to read them? Thanks for the help.
