Opening documents

I have a user who was sent some items in a zip file. Some of those items had the ‘windows’ icon, and she couldn’t open them. I told her that they aren’t usable files, they can’t be opened. They are system files of some sort. Please confirm exactly what those files with the ‘windows’ icon are. New Tech! Help!
