Opening File and Print Sharing to my DSL

When I load TCP\IP on a client machine on my network I am asked something to the effect ?you have an open Internet connection; do you want to leave file and print sharing open on this IP address so that others on the Internet may see your shares?? I just say no. If I am willing to expose the shares on my computer to the Internet how can I configure that?
