Optical mouse + booting problems

I installed a MS optical intellimouse on my W98 via USB. Drivers used were the ones that came with the mouse. After restarting the PC following the installation, it hangs on the W98 logo screen. Finally after 4 times of shutdowns, it boots fine.I tried plugging the mouse in a PS2 port(came with adapter) it still did the same thing. Then I replaced my old mouse and the PC did not experience any boot problems. Is there something I’m overlooking or should I use the default drivers?
