Outlook 6 Problem on win98se

I’m having huge probs with Outlook express 6 on a 98se machine.
Everytime a read or send email request is sent it is nuking the connection to the modem.
No settings are defined to disconnect on a read/send request. It is driving me mad.

I don’t want to lose the mail addresses and email msg traffic by uninstalling the rogue app. Does anyone know how I can install OE5x without sacrificing the existing email data etc?
