Packard Bell IGo 6204 memory issue

I’ve just tried upgrading my above laptop from 256mb ram to 512mb, but when i start it up, it says there is still only 256mb. I got the memory from crucial.com who i have bought from before and never had any problems with. What could cause this issue?
